Which one is this?

What kind of deck work do you need?

Most deck calls are one of three things. You want a new deck in composite, you want one in real wood, or the deck you have is tired and you want to know if it can be saved. Pick the closest one.

  • Deck resurfaced with brown composite boards and new white railings

    Trex & TimberTech Composite

Boards that do not rot, splinter or need staining. More up front, much less work every summer after.

    See composite decks →
  • Long deck along the side of a house with new grey boards and railings

    Natural Wood Decks

Real wood boards. It costs less to build and looks like wood because it is, with a coat of sealer every couple of years.

    See wood decks →
  • Two views side by side: new deck framing and joists before the boards go down, and a finished grey composite deck with white and black railings

    Repair & Restoration

Loose boards, a wobbly railing, soft spots, or a deck that has gone grey. We fix the frame first, then the rest.

Not sure which way to go? We go through both at the free estimate.

Composite decking

Trex and TimberTech composite decks

We build composite decks with Trex and TimberTech boards, which do not rot, splinter or need staining. Underneath, the frame is built to code, with footings below the frost line and a permit pulled where your township needs one.

Weathered wood deck and stairs with peeling red stain and worn railings, patio furniture behind
Before: an old wood deck and stairs with the stain peeling off.
Composite deck with cable railing and lit stair risers
After: composite boards, black cable railing and lit stair risers.

Why composite costs more

The boards cost more than wood, and the hidden fasteners and railing systems add to it. What you get back is time: no sanding, no staining, and a wash once or twice a year.

Trex or TimberTech

Both make good boards. The differences are mostly in the colors, the board profiles and the price of the line you pick. We go through them with you at the estimate.

Natural wood

Natural wood decks

A wood deck costs less to build than composite and looks like wood because it is. It needs cleaning and a coat of sealer every couple of years to keep water out of the boards. The frame and footings underneath are the same as on a composite deck.

Worn wood deck boards with peeling paint along the side of a house, tools lying on the boards
Before: worn boards with the paint coming off.
Long deck along the side of a house with new grey boards and railings
After: new boards, rails and trim.

Keeping a wood deck good

Clean it every spring, keep leaves and planters from sitting on the boards, and seal it when water stops beading on the surface. Skip that for a few years and the boards start to crack and cup.

Wood or composite?

Wood costs less now. Composite costs less of your time over the years. If you plan to stay in the house, the upkeep you skip with composite adds up.

Repair & restoration

Deck repair and restoration

Most tired decks do not need tearing out. We check the frame first. If the joists, beams and footings are sound, we replace the bad boards and railings and resurface or refinish the rest. If the frame is not sound, we tell you.

Weathered wood deck boards with moss and worn stain beside the back of a house
Before: weathered wood boards.
Deck resurfaced with brown composite boards and new white railings
After: new composite boards and white railings.

What we check first

The ledger board where the deck bolts to the house, the joists under the boards, the footings and the railing posts. A deck can look fine from above and be rotten where it meets the house.

Composite boards on an old frame

Sometimes that works. If the joists are sound and close enough together for composite, we can resurface the deck without rebuilding the frame. If they are not, we tell you before you pay for boards.

I recently hired Dynasty Construction & Roofing to take care of some issues with my roof, including replacing missing shingles and recapping my chimney, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the experience. From the start, they were responsive, professional, and easy to work with. They clearly explained the scope of work, provided a fair estimate, and showed up on time ready to get the job done. The quality of their workmanship really stood out and everything was completed with attention to detail, and you can tell they take pride in what they do. The new shingles blend in perfectly with the existing roof, and the chimney recap was done cleanly and securely. They also made sure to clean up thoroughly after the job, which I really appreciated.

  • Two roofers working side by side on a shingle roof, one running a coil nailer and one with a hammer, tool belts and a circular saw beside them

    Roofing

We tear off the old roof, look at the decking underneath, and replace whatever is soft before anything goes back down. New underlayment, new flashing, new shingles. If we find rot, you hear about it before it gets covered up, not after.

  • Brick chimney rising above a grey shingle roof with metal flashing at its base

    Chimney

Repointing, crown repair, new flashing, and full rebuilds above the roofline. We flash chimneys with step flashing and counterflashing. A bead of caulk where the chimney meets the roof is not flashing, and it will fail.

Questions about decks

Do I need a permit to build a deck?

In most townships around here, yes, for a new deck or a rebuild. We check with yours and pull the permit when it is needed.

Trex or TimberTech, which is better?

Both make good composite boards. The difference is mostly the color range, the board profiles and the price of the line you choose. We go through the options with you at the estimate.

Can you put composite boards on my existing frame?

Sometimes. The joists have to be sound and spaced closely enough for composite, which usually needs them tighter than wood does. We check before we quote.

How deep do deck footings go?

Below the frost line, at the depth your township's code sets. A footing that sits above it moves every winter, and the deck moves with it.

Should I repair my deck or replace it?

Look underneath before you decide. If the frame and footings are sound, new boards and railings usually do the job for a lot less than a new deck. If the frame is rotten, new boards on top will not fix it.

Do you build stairs and railings too?

Yes. Stairs and railings are part of the deck, and we build them to the same code as the rest of it.
